The plot is loosely based on the Qing Dynasty, Chinese novel " Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio " ( J€K煂妏u ) by Pu Songling from the story " A Chinese Ghost Story ", about a poor traveling scholar who encounters a beautiful female ghost. In the following years Cheung was praised for his performances in films which found popularity with audiences worldwide, including " A Chinese Ghost Story " ( 1987 ), " Rouge " ( 1987 ) and Wong Kar-Wai's " Days of Being Wild " ( 1991 ).
